Escape Room RVA is located at 7025 Three Chopt Rd.
Imagine being trapped in a super villain's lair. You have an hour to escape, and the only way out is by solving a diabolical series of puzzles and riddles. The only way to ensure your survival is by utilizing your wit, intuition, and perhaps most importantly, your companions.
The super villain room is just one of three unique rooms currently open at Escape Room RVA, which bills itself as "the world leader in elegant adventure for the spirited intellectual and extraordinary team building experiences." Located in the Village Shopping Center behind Martin's grocery store, finding Escape Room RVA can be a challenge in itself.
After signing in, participants are led down a corridor to be briefed.
Once you find it, you'll descend a flight of stairs to the front counter, where you check in. You'll be led to a waiting room to meet up with your team, which can contain up to 8 or 12 people depending on the room. There is no minimum number for a team, but it's suggested that you bring at least four people. You may be grouped with strangers if your team is just a few people – but you might just become friends by the end!
Escape Room provides you with a complimentary drink or snack before you're led to your room's entrance. A staff member will brief you on what awaits you down the dark corridor behind them. Once you enter the room, you'll see a large timer on the wall displaying 45 minutes to an hour. You're not truly trapped, as you may return to the entrance to use the bathroom or to take a phone call, but the exit door at the end of the room will not open until all puzzles have been solved. Use of cell phones within the escape room itself is prohibited. You may want to consider bringing a notepad and pen – they could prove to be very useful.
Each room will have a distinct decor.
I'll avoid spoiling or hinting at any of the specific puzzles you'll face within the room, but the room that the PartyRVA team took on, the Super Villain Room, contained four small chambers. Each chamber was themed around one of Batman's nemeses – The Riddler, The Penguin, Catwoman, and the Joker. They each contained a few puzzles and clues which would usually lead you to one of the other chambers. If all puzzles are solved in time, you'll escape and be rewarded with not only a feeling of accomplishment, but an Escape Room RVA bracelet, as well.
Rooms are changed every few months to ensure fresh experiences for escape room enthusiasts. Other rooms that are currently open are Poe's Chamber which is based on the mind of the poet, and the dark room, called The Cursed Crypt. The newest room, Glitch in the Matrix, is set to open March 3rd.
Your team may need to ask for clues along the way. You'll be given three opportunities to ask for help – in our case, we were told to do our best interpretive dance in front of the room's camera to consult a staff member. We managed to escape with four minutes left on the clock, but may not have done so without a bit of guidance.
Our experience with the escape room was very enjoyable. It could make for a unique date night, or just something different to do with friends. Escaping required a lot of teamwork and problem solving, and for those reasons, it's an understandably popular choice for Richmond's many local businesses to use as a team building activity. Escape Room RVA also offers corporate packages, which include private access to all rooms, complimentary beverages, and game hosts.
The base rate for admission is $25 per player for one hour of play. Use the PartyRVA discount here to get 10% off of each ticket!
