Slide the City - Melbourne, Australia
Have you ever imagined one of Richmond's downtown streets as a gigantic slip n' slide? Well, maybe not. But it sounds pretty awesome, right?
That's essentially what Slide the City will be doing when they come to downtown Richmond on Saturday, June 18, from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Here are the quick facts:
Presented by Sack Lunch Productions, an event company based in Utah, the Richmond event will transform a hill on East Byrd Street into a water slide over 1,000 feet long. According to the company, it is the longest water slide of its kind in the world.
Sack Lunch is known for this event as well as the Color Me Rad 5k, a run where participants are blasted with brightly colored paint at checkpoints. This video from the 2014 Slide the City event in Salt Lake City provides an excellent look as to what attendees can expect to see.
The slide itself is well padded and divided into three lanes with inflatable barriers. Sliders do need to exercise caution as they will reach considerable speeds on the way down.
Slide the City - Phoenix, AZ
The slide won't be the only attraction. As with most large-scale events in the city, there will be food trucks, drinks, and live music along the slide's length.
Tickets are available through Slide the City's web page and several packages are offered. Early bird pricing is currently an option – the single slider package is $10 if purchased now, and will gradually rise to $20 by the day of the event.
The triple slider package includes three slides within a two-hour limit. The early bird price is $25, eventually rising to $45. There's also an ultimate slider package which includes as many slides as you can fit in between the hours of 9 a.m. and noon. The ultimate slider price starts at $45 and will be $65 on the event date.
All packages include an entry wristband, drawstring bag, and mouth guard. The triple and ultimate packages also include an inner tube, which must be used when sliding. Single sliders are expected to bring their own tube or purchase one at the event.
According to a press release from Sack Lunch, Slide the City is "dedicated to responsible water and resource use and to raise awareness about water conservation and scarcity. The slide recirculates about 12,000 to 20,000 gallons of water throughout the day. After the event, the water is treated and/or recycled back into the community. Sack Lunch says the event will go on rain or shine, though it would have to be shut down in the case of a thunderstorm.
