Why We Love It

Newly remodeled after a $63 million dollar renovation, the Altria theater re-opened its doors late in 2014, simultaneously providing a space that is at once new to Richmond and also rich with Richmond history.

At the southwest corner of Monroe Park, the Altria - formerly known as The Mosque and The Landmark - is the largest venue of Richmond CenterStage's performing arts complex. The theater was constructed in 1926 to be used by the Shriners as the ACCA Temple Shrine; it was purchased in the 1940s by the city and refurbished between 1994 and 1995. Most recently it has seen an enormous renovation, that involved gutting nearly everything while strictly preserving the original Moorish revival style with the original accents, Moroccan-themed wall and floor tiles and original stenciling.

Group Logistics

The Altria can host events for 25 guests up to 3,600 guests in its (square feet) theater. The Altria also has a 15,000 sq ft grand ballroom (link) with a capacity of 1,000 guests (600 seated), 5 private lounges and 8 concession stands where food and beverage can be served to guests.

Each private lounge can hold 75- 100 guests and includes a personal bar with a bartender that the Altria provides. The lounges are the Tom and Anne Garland Farrell Lounge, the Mary Morton Parsons Lounge, the Subscriber's Lounge, the North Lounge and the South Lounge. Events such as weddings will often include the use of a lounge so that couples can have private personal space.

Rentals include tables, chairs, basic linens, table numbers, basic centerpieces, event staff, and an on-site supervisor.

Add-ons they can provide is parking in a nearby lot at $7/per car. Lighting. Sound. Production. Valet service can be arranged.

Any florist, planner or bakery can be used, however people can not bring in their own food and beverage. SAVOR is the caterer for the Altria.

The space is dog friendly and has hosted the Richmond SPCA for private events (not for public shows) in the lounges and in the balllroom.

"An historical theater with beautiful mosaic tile work. Someone who appreciates older buildings will enjoy this venue." - Yelp

"The Landmark Theater provides you with all that you need. It is truly a historic landmark." - Linda J., Yelp

"This is an absolutely stunning historical theater. Lovingly renovated and just breathtaking. We saw a musical here and sat clear up in the balcony. Even so, we had a clear view (the heads of people in front of us were not in the way, even though I am quite short) and could hear everything clearly." - Yelp

"it was quite beautiful. As silly as it sounds, the bathrooms were amazing. They have refreshment stands on nearly every floor, as well as some seating. " - Dawn W., Yelp

"This theater was constructed in 1927 and was just recently completed with a $63 million restoration. All the work completed provided a state of the art sound system, improved the electrical, heating and cooling systems, plumbing and detailed restoration of the walls and ceilings. The plaster walls were completed with a great detail by great artisans who were able to match the existing walls. These artisans also painted the historic walls and even were able to repair the historic tiles so that you cannot even tell the difference between the original and the repaired locations." - Yelp

"The improved restrooms have been a great addition to this nearly 90 year old building." - Yelp
